Saturday and Sunday, June 14 and 15, Overnight Camping and Old Growth Forest at Monroe State Forest. Participants will join David Miller for an overnight camping trip in Monroe State Forest and off trail exploration of nearby old growth forest. The hike to the campsite is on good trails. The exploration of old growth forest requires participants who are fit for some strenuous off trail hiking on a steep slope that is littered with rocks and fallen trees. On Saturday, June 14, at 9:00 AM we will meet at the Unitarian Church parking lot on 140 Shore Drive in Worcester and drive to the Dunbar Brook trailhead, a distance of about 94 miles and about two hours driving time. There is a tent site available on a first come first served basis in Monroe State Forest. We will hike about seven tenths of a mile from the parking area to the site. There we will eat lunch, set up camp and gather firewood. Participants will bring their own food, camping gear, tents, and sleeping gear, and are invited to cook their own meals over the campfire. After lunch on Saturday, we will explore the old growth forest on the steep rocky slope above Dunbar Brook. There are trees, including one white pine, in the area that are several hundred years old, three to four feet in diameter and very tall. There are also sizable old yellow birch, sugar maple, red maple and poplar trees in the area. On Sunday, June 15, after a leisurely breakfast, we will explore some of the nearby trails. After lunch we will drive back to Worcester.
To ask questions or to sign up for this outing, contact David Miller at 508-853-8964 or email him at sentierdeau@gmail.com.

Activities for May 2025

Dear Members and Friends:

Please join us for the following Green Mountain Club, Worcester Section, activities for May 2025. Please also check our website at Green Mountain Club Worcester Section to learn more about our hiking club and activities.

Saturday and Sunday, May 10 and 11. Please join us for trail work on the Long Trail in Stratton, Vermont. We will meet at 10:00 AM on Saturday, May 10 at the home of Steve and Terry Nordborg,  44 Pike Hollow Road in Stratton, Vermont. Steve Nordborg’s cell phone number is 774-633-0099 if you have trouble finding his house. Car pooling is available from Paxton,MA.  For more information about the weekend or car pooling, call Steve Crowe at 508-450-1091 or email him atsteve@sunshinelandscapingco.com. Trail maintenance tools can be provided if you do not have them.  For driving directions, use google maps for 44 Pike Hollow Road, Stratton, Vermont.

Saturday, May 17. The Contoocook River. Cross the border into Southern New Hampshire to run the upper reaches of this scenic river. Call Leader, David Miller at 508-853-8964 to register or for more information. There is no white water on this trip, but the first part of the river has a strong current and some large rocks around which we have to maneuver. There may be portages around fallen trees that block the river from bank to bank. One is at the lunch spot where the best portage is a landing left on the right side of the island just before the blockage. Here and there we encounter trees that have fallen in the water and have partially blocked the way so that we need to maneuver through narrow passages between the trees and the bank. Fallen trees present a risk of pinning a canoe or kayak and/or paddler in or under the water. Skilled watercraft maneuvering is required.
